With The Zachos Team's background in construction and homebuilding, we'd like to share a few home maintenance tips moving into the fall and winter season. Here are a few tips to help you make sure your house is in good shape.
Sealing
Make sure your windows and doors are sealed. Always check for drafts, and use weather-strips or caulk to seal any gaps. Replace worn-out seals to improve energy efficiency and keep your home cozy. Proper insulation helps maintain indoor temperatures and reduces heating costs. Inspect insulation in your attic, walls, and basement. Add more insulation if needed, particularly in drafty areas. For apartments, discuss insulation concerns with your landlord.
Heating
You can schedule a professional inspection and tune-up of your furnace or heat pump. Replace filters and test the system to ensure your heating is working properly. If you live in an apartment, coordinate with your landlord or building management to make sure everything looks good. If you have a chimney or fireplace, have it inspected and cleaned by a professional. Check the fireplace for cracks and repair any damage.
Roof
Prevent water damage by clearing fallen leaves and debris out of your gutter using a sturdy ladder. Remove debris by hand or with a gutter scoop, then flush with a garden hose to ensure water flows freely. Inspect your roof for missing, damaged, or loose shingles before winter arrives. Look for signs of wear around chimneys and vents. Consider hiring a professional for a thorough inspection.
Outdoors
Disconnect and drain garden hoses. Shut off the water supply to outdoor faucets and drain any remaining water. Blow out sprinkler systems to prevent water from freezing in pipes. Trim dead or overgrown branches to prevent damage to your home during windy or stormy weather. Keep branches at least three feet from the house to avoid damage. Give your outdoor furniture a good scrub with mild soap and water. Once dry, store it in a shed or garage, or use weather-resistant covers. For apartments, consider indoor storage or protective covers for balcony furniture.
Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors
Ensure these devices are functional. Test each detector and replace batteries if needed. Replace units that are over 10 years old to ensure your home is safe.
Enjoy the cozy season with the peace of mind that your home is well-prepared and maintained! If you need any professional recommendations or further advice, reach out to The Zachos Team for assistance with home maintenance.
