Nonprofit Spotlight: Partners in Education

"Students need various types of support, from glasses to money for tests or rain jackets for international trips."

These are just a few of the needs fulfilled by the Douglas County Partners in Education, or PIE for short. These words come from Dr. Deborah Johnson-Blake, who also has her own nickname: Dr. DJ. She got involved through her own child being enrolled in Douglas County schools, and served as the 2023-24 Chair of the organization.

"I’m a servant leader in all facets of my life, and this is one of my purposes: to give and serve."

PIE tips the scales in favor of the students, allowing them to excel academically even in the face of financial struggles. Due to the high volume of children, some may end up being left out or without the tools they need to succeed.

"For items the Douglas County School System is unable to purchase, PIE will step in as a nonprofit to provide essentials like glasses, enabling students to see the board and take accurate notes.”

The support is not only about providing physical resources, but also empowering students to succeed academically. As far as how businesses can help, the sky is really the limit.

“All businesses and organizations are invited to participate in our program without dues or fees; the goal is to serve. Organizations can donate time, talent, and treasures. However, they only need an interest in student achievement and a willingness to become involved in the program. So, the opportunities for them to work with schools are limitless.”

One of these organizations is, of course, The Zachos Team. We’ve been happy to help Partners in Education of Douglas County in their endeavors through donations of our time and resources. Paul has leveraged his connections to deliver coats and other materials to students, while Dee Dee has served on the PIE Board of Directors for five years and is now entering her sixth.

“They are servant leaders in every definition of the word.”

PIE also hosts several events and fundraisers to spread awareness and support. The Sunshine Fund allows people to donate directly towards the needs of students, their families, or in the classrooms. The Tour of Schools event, held quarterly, invites partners and community members to visit schools, see the work being done, and identify areas needing support.

“Another initiative, PIE & Coffee, is held at different locations around Douglas County and provides a social setting for partners and school administrators to discuss how they can help, even attracting new potential partners.”

Although there’s always work to be done, Dr. DJ is grateful for the constant assistance they already receive.

"Thank you to The Zachos Team for always being available and willing to help us achieve our mission of student achievement."

She also emphasizes the need for more community support, especially financial, to continue serving Douglas County School System students and fostering partnerships. "We can't do it without partners," she says, highlighting the crucial role of community support in PIE's mission.

And while the process can be challenging at times, there’s nothing more satisfying than being the one to make an impact where it’s needed.

"I’m just happy that we can say 'yes' when a request is made. That’s one of my favorite things."
