Weiss Lake is one of The Zachos Team’s favorite spots in Alabama. Located just a two hour drive from Atlanta, it’s a staple of eastern Alabama, and it’s hard not to see why. If you’ve never heard of Weiss Lake, here’s a few reasons why it’s worth the trip.
Weiss Lake itself is known as the “Crappie Capital of the World.” As you might imagine, fishing is a worthy pastime if you’re looking for an activity on the water. While you’re free to explore the lake and try your luck with your own gear, Weiss Lake Crappie Guides also offers tours to those who want a more guided experience. This service lets you take advantage of the wealth of fishing that the lake has to offer without worrying too much about planning your own itinerary.
There are several historical sites scattered around the lake, most prominently Cornwall Furnace Memorial Park. This park contains a well-preserved furnace used for smelting iron. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and is said to be the first water-powered cold blast furnace in the country. You can see this furnace alongside a nice view of the water, a typical sight all along Weiss Lake.
For a more man made attraction for the whole family, you can check out Pirates Bay Waterpark in Leesburg. This water park overlooks Weiss Lake and has multiple water slides, splash zones, and pools. The water park also sports concession stands for the appetite you’ll work up on the slides, and a gift shop if you want something to remember your fun day out. However, this location is only open during the summertime, so be sure to plan your visit accordingly.
Weiss Lake sports many marinas and docks along its vast waterfront, but one that The Zachos Team really loves is Decks and Docks. Located right on the lake, Decks and Docks serves many classic surf-and-turf dishes with a great view while you dine. The restaurant even has its own boat docks, meaning you can stop for a visit right in the middle of cruising around the lake.
If you’re looking for a different sort of waterfront view, another nearby natural attraction is Yellow Creek Falls. Located on the northwest side of the lake, close to Leesburg, Yellow Creek Falls is only accessible by kayak due to its location on private property. However, those who are adventurous enough to make the trek are treated to a one hundred foot tall waterfall. The journey in also leads through a pair of massive stone pillars, remnants of what used to be something greater. This is an incredibly unique opportunity for an outing, and those with an adventurous spirit should not miss the chance to see this landmark.
As you can see, Weiss Lake offers more than meets the eye, but it’s also a relaxing place to plan a getaway or even settle down. Even though we’re located in Georgia, The Zachos Team is licensed in Alabama, meaning we can help you find property in this beautiful area.
